Time Surfer from Kumobius, the team behind Bean’s Quest, is an endless glider that can easily be described as Tiny Wings with a different skin. You may be controlling a surfer instead of a bird, and the game has added power ups, but the basic gameplay is the same.
As the Time Surfer, you will move forward continuously, leaping and jumping off of hills for speed boosts and to catch air time. In Tiny Wings the idea was to navigate these hills in a way to keep your speed going at all times, and the same is true of Time Surfer.
If you’re a pro at Tiny Wings, trust me, you can pick up and play Time Surfer with no problems at all – you’ll be an instant expert! Even if you have not played Tiny Wings before it’s not tough.
When you’re up in the air, tap on the screen to slope downwards towards an incline, which will send you soaring once again. Keep this up over and over again to maintain a quick speed, whipping through the levels in no time at all.
Time Surfer does incorporate some extras that you won’t find in similar games. For example, there’s a neat rewind feature that lets you undo a move, which is handy if you make a critical error when playing, and there are plenty of power ups to grab as you go, along with coins.
The two tap gameplay should be commended – it’s simple and easy to execute. Tap on the right side of the screen to dive downwards and tap left for the rewind functionality.
Time Surfer is a lot like a quicker, more hectic version of Tiny Wings, which, as it turns out, is a lot of fun. It’s bright, it’s flashy, it’s psychedelic, and it’s impossible to put down. Power ups make the game unpredictable, and there are also enemies and obstacles to avoid – this makes Time Surfer quite a challenging title.
There are no levels in the game, but there are a series of missions to complete. For example, you may need to collect a certain number of coins, or travel a certain distance to complete a goal. When you complete goals, they’re replaced with new ones, and you will also level up, unlocking cute little pets that travel along with you, providing stat bonuses.
This game never ends, so you can play it over and over again, as often as you would like. Levels are dynamically created so you’re playing a different game each time you pick up your iPad, which means Time Surfer never gets boring. And if you think it’s too easy, wait until you try the “Hell Zone!”
What I liked: I don’t often make note of the music in games, but Time Surfer’s chiptunes must be mentioned – this game has a fantastic soundtrack! Though I disliked the app at first because of its similarities with Tiny Wings, I came to appreciate it for its differences and now it is a staple on my iPad.
What I didn’t like: Time Surfer has leaderboards, but no achievements, which was disappointing. It’s also a Tiny Wings clone, which feels unoriginal at times.
To buy or not to buy: If you have played and enjoyed Tiny Wings or if you love the endless runner genre, you won’t want to pass up Time Surfer. I doubt you’ll find a better way to spend a dollar!
