I’m an unenthusiastic player of racing games at best, because racing is not a favorite genre of mine, but I was pleasantly surprised by Mini Motor Racing HD, which impressed me with its fantastic graphics, tight controls, and slick little cars.
The cars in this game are like little remote controlled vehicles, enhanced with upgrades that make them go super fast, for a crazy quick-paced racing experience.
There are several game modes, but you will want to start out with the classic campaign to get a handle on the controls. You drive your car with a steering wheel joystick located on the lower left side of the screen, and use the right side of the screen for nitro boosts. The controls are sensitive, so make sure to touch lightly or your car will spin out of control.
If you don’t care for the control scheme, there’s an options menu that has other control styles. You can use the standard wheel, a slider bar, tank controls that put left and right buttons on either side of the screen, or toggle buttons that put left and right buttons on the left side of the screen.
The goal is, of course, to win races, which will earn you prize money and the ability to move on to more difficult racing courses. After each race you can choose to change your car, and there are a lot of options in this game. Each car has varying speed, handling, nitro, and acceleration, and you can even unlock additional cars as you play.
You can also use the cash that you earn from races to upgrade your cars, enhancing your abilities so that you will perform better in future races. While racing you’ll also be able to grab extra cash and power ups like nitro boosts that will help you win.
In addition to the normal campaign mode with 120 races, there’s also a bonus campaign that has another 92 races, and a third campaign with 104 races that can be unlocked with in-game cash or real cash. You can also skip campaign mode to play in quick race mode, or race against your friends in multiplayer mode using Game Center or via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
There are Game Center achievements to earn and leaderboards to top, so you can find out which of your friends is the best racer.
The game is currently holiday themed, playing Christmas music in the background and sporting some holiday-oriented decorations, which is a fun touch.
What I liked: Mini Motor Racing HD has impressive graphics, and I loved the little cars.
What I didn’t like: The game crashed quite a few times, and there are an abundance of in-app purchases
To buy or not to buy: This is a great arcade-style racing game with plenty of unlockables, great graphics, and addictive gameplay. It’s a must have for racing fans.
