Apple Redesigns Service Status Dashboard: Makes it Easy to Find What Service is Down

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 4.24Apple’s System Status website got a major update today, adding a detailed listing of all of its services, stores, and iCloud products, so that users can see at a glance what’s up and running and what’s down.

Products that are functioning normally are marked with a green square, while products that are experiencing downtime are marked with an orange triangle.

There’s also a new timeline feature, which lists which products have been down in recent history. For example, the status page currently lists iCloud downtime from 10:34 to 11:16 a.m. this morning, and 3:13 to 3:32 p.m. this afternoon.

It also lists mail as having been down for about 20 minutes after 10:30, and it also lets readers know how many people were affected. In that particular incident, 2.15 percent of people were unable to access iCloud mail.

The new comprehensive website is a welcome change from the previous system, which simply noted whether all services were online. There have been several iCloud outages over the last few days, which likely prompted the shift to a more extensive notification website.
