Across much of the country, winter is a season during which the weather outside can truly be frightful –making it the perfect time of year to curl up with your iPad. Fortunately for those of us who tend to be a little less than outdoorsy, the iPad can really help to celebrate, experience and enjoy the season (while watching the snow fall through our living room windows).
1. Fireplace Live HD Free (Free) – Nothing says winter like curling up in front of a roaring fire in the fireplace, but not all of us are lucky enough to actually have one. As you relax, enjoy sounds from an actual roaring fire, silence or even tunes from your music collection playing in the background (with a built-in sleep timer just in case you drift off). This free to download app reminds me of my childhood when I first discovered the yule log television channel, only this is portable and in HD!
2. 2012 Winter Festival of Lights (Free) – Thanks to this app, everybody can get into the twinkly-light holiday spirit, even if you aren’t fortunate enough to travel to Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada to witness the CAA Winter Festival of Lights (running from November 3, 2012 to January 31, 2013). Enjoy the event, beginning with the amazing opening ceremonies all the way through the considerable and spectacular illuminations (totalling over three million sparkling lights along a 6km route).
3. Winter Survival Kit (Free) – While technically this is intended to be an iPhone app, it is equally valuable for your iPad (even though it isn’t tailor-made). If you find yourself stuck or stranded somewhere, this app will help you to “find your current location, call 911, notify your friends and family, calculate how long you can run your engine to keep warm and stay safe from carbon monoxide poisoning.” Periodic alerts check in on you, but not so often that they drain your battery too quickly in the event of an emergency.
