Haven’t Got a Penny? Try These Fun, Free Christmas Apps for Kids

It’s no secret that holiday expenditures add up quickly. With that in mind, we offer this list of kid-friendly Christmas apps that won’t cost you a penny, or even a ha-penny. We hope they will delight children (and grown-ups) who are awaiting the arrival of Christmas.

1. Toca Hair Salon — Christmas (Free) — Released as a compliment to the über-successful Hair Salon, Swedish developer Toca Boca offers the user a chance to shave Santa’s beard or coif a Christmas tree. Kids will have loads of fun making Santa look silly — or even bald — then growing his hair back and starting all over again. Use the camera button to save your best snapshots to the camera roll.

2. Cut the Rope – Holiday Gift (Free) — Kids of all ages love Cut the Rope HD, and this holiday newly updated version of the game does not disappoint. In addition to more than 20 new levels the app also lets the user create a photo Christmas card to share with friends and watch totally adorable episodes of Om Nom Stories from within the app. Stay tuned for a full review of Cut the Rope – Holiday Gift and hear more about Om Nom’s Christmas adventures later this week.

3. Monster Christmas (Free) — This interactive digi-book, created by South American developer Purple Ely recently joined the App Store’s holiday offerings. Monster Christmas includes playful sticker-like graphics that a child can manipulate with touch gestures. Kids will enjoy meeting all four members of the Monster family — Mom, Dad, Peter, and Peril — as they learn about everything from silly slimy cupcakes to the real gift of Christmas, which is spending time together as a family.

4. Monstrees Christmas (Free) — Our Monster theme continues with this fast-paced universal iOS game. Kids will giggle as they try to identify and then tap all of the monsters that are masquerading as Christmas Trees. Gameplay is a snap to learn, making Monstrees the perfect holiday game to spend when a child has a free minute or two as he we waits expectantly for Santa’s arrival.

5. Christmas WordSearch (Free) — Any fan of word games will enjoy Christmas WordSearch. This holiday-themed take on a classic word search puzzle will challenge kids and adults alike. When a word is selected correctly it’s highlighted with glittery stars. Want to beat your best time? Simply turn on the in-app timer to track how long each puzzle takes to solve.
