Play Bubblis HD For Tetris-Like Word Game Fun – iPad App Review

Who would have thought to combine word games with bubble popping? Bubblis HD is a little bit of this and a little bit of that with a whole lot of ”huh?” thrown in. You don’t need a big vocabulary to play this word game, but you do need a good strategy.

Players start off with a list of words and seven slots for letters. The word list only shows the first word until there is space on the board for the second and third, and so on.

For example, the first word on the list might be “dye” players try to spell that word with letters that randomly fall from the sky. If the letters that fall don’t include d, y or e, you still have to place them on the board, but be sure to try to leave room for the first word.

Once there is at least one letter in the first row, the word for the second row appears. Each word must be created in its designated row. You can’t make the word “Own” in the first row if it appears in the third row.  Once a word is created it will disappear and take surrounding letters with it.

Most words are only three letters long with a couple of four letter words thrown in. The difficulty is in getting the letters to line up properly so that you can create a word on your list. Sometimes, you’ll have the “d” and the “e,” but the “y” never shows up and you don’t have enough room to place letters anywhere else.

Sometimes, smoke will fill the screen so that it is nearly impossible to see the letters that are falling. You can use the fan power up if you have it, or blow into your iPad’s microphone to clear the air. It will eventually go away, but not after you’ve accidentally placed a letter where it didn’t belong. The screen will also “steam up” and you’ll have to wipe away the condensation in order to see anything.

Although the game is interesting, it is hard to figure out. The situation with the letter drops adds to an already confusing game, creating a vibe of stressful irritation. Why is it that 12 different letters will drop and none of them are a “d”? If you time your placement right, you can control the letter drop to some degree, but it is difficult.

Even though it is difficult to play and you don’t have much control over how the game goes, this is still an interesting word puzzle. It reminds me of Tetris, but with words. It isn’t like Spell Tower, though. The rules are more complicated than that.

What I liked: Once you start to understand how the game works, you can really strategize with placement and timing of letters.

What I didn’t like: The tutorial was vague. It doesn’t explain the rules very well. It can start to get frustrating if you find yourself stuck and can’t figure out why.

To buy or not to buy: Fans of word games will enjoy this challenging puzzle. It is reasonably priced and once you get the hang of it, the game can be rather enjoyable.
