The trusty crew at This Day in Music Apps has a new offering for fans who know Peter Green from Peter Frampton, or can name all three Yardbirds guitarists without consulting Google. This Day in Classic Rock for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch offers facts from AC/DC to ZZ Top.
As the name suggests, this entertaining app features a daily fact or three, trivia questions, quizzes, and an overview of 50 Classic rock albums including titles by the Who, the Clash, Black Sabbath, and David Bowie.
The daily facts remind music fans how much can happen in a single day. On November 20 Bill Haley and His Comets “Rock Around the Clock” went to number one on the UK singles chart in 1955 and Bob Dylan recorded his debut album in 1961 for “about $402.” Not too shabby.
The app also includes a free Classic Rock ringtone, and two free wallpaper images — Slash and Steven Tyler — to trick out your iDevice like it’s 1976.
The trivia questions were challenging! I scored only 8 out of 10 on my quiz. While I knew what year MTV began in the US (1981) and that Jakob Dylan fronts the Wallflowers, to me, Budgie will always be Siouxsie Sioux’s drummer — I had no idea a hard rock band from Wales shared the same name. I would have liked to be able to find out the correct answer to the questions I missed.
Download This Day in Classic Rock from the App Store $2.99.
What I liked: The app was easy to use.The built-in calendar makes it easy to jump from one day to another, while the arrows enable the user to move forward or backward one day at a time. I liked that the soundtrack could be muted easily from within the app.
What I didn’t like: Diehard fans of ’60s and ’70s music may chafe at the inclusion of punk and new wave into the app’s offerings.
To buy or not to buy: Fans of Classic Rock will enjoy the memories that surface while using This Day in Classic Rock.
