Make Beautiful Music with Flea Symphony – iPad Game Review

You’ve heard of flea circuses, but a Flea Symphony? Yep. This is a new and exciting game idea from Majesco Entertainment that uses sound-based puzzles to delight and challenge music loving gamers.

In this game, you will help Maestro Piccolo’s Flea Symphony from going out of business by using the fleas to make music. You will bounce the little buggers off of drums, launch them from guitar strings, and send them shooting out of tuba cannons in order to make beautiful music.

When I opened Flea Symphony, it had non-Retina graphics, forcing me to sit through an extra download. Though I had to endure an extra 90MB download after getting the initial game, it was worth the wait for the gorgeous Retina graphics. Flea Symphony looks downright amazing on the Retina iPad.

To play the game, you will arrange instruments in a specific order before fleas bounce down from the top of the screen, playing music. If the instruments are in the proper order, music will play, but if they are not, you will need to adjust your parameters.

There is a music bar at the top of the screen and you must use it as a guideline for adjusting the instruments to the proper levels. Each instrument must line up with a blue line on the score. When everything lines up right, you will complete the level, moving on to a more difficult challenge.

I enjoyed the innovative gameplay in Flea Symphony, but I thought that it ramped up too slowly. Though the music-oriented puzzles were fun, they were too easy, which made the pacing of the game a bit tedious. Still, even though it is nearly too easy for an adult player, it’s a great game for kids to play.

It’s simple enough to figure out the puzzles, and experimenting with solutions is always fun thanks to the musical tones that play with each try.

There’s no real score keeping in this game, but there are 30 different in game achievements to earn, and you can share your progress on Facebook. You will also earn a gold, silver, or bronze note for each level, which gives you opportunities to improve your score.

All in all, there are five different worlds, and more than 100 levels to play, so there’s plenty of musical fun to be had. If you’re looking for an innovative game experience, look no further than Flea Symphony.

What I liked: The gameplay in Flea Symphony is unique, and I really enjoyed the graphics. I liked the musical component, but I’d like to see far more sound variation in future updates.

What I didn’t like: This is a slow paced game. It can be yawn inducing at times, especially if you play it for long periods of time. There’s also a major crashing bug involved – this game will not open on my third generation iPad when I have no access to WiFi.

To buy or not to buy: Flea Symphony has great graphics and innovative gameplay, making it well worth the purchase price. However, if you need to play this without a WiFi connection take a pass until there’s an update – it’s broken on some iPads.
