Virgin Media Offers New TV Anywhere Service for Web and iOS

Entertainment giant Virgin Media recently announced the launch of Virgin TV Anywhere, which allows users to watch television shows and movies on the go. Subscribers to Virgin Media TV can even watch their favorite TV shows while riding the London Underground to work.

The new mobile streaming service allows users to stream television from up to 45 different channels, including entertainment, sports, kinds, news, music, movies and more. Premium subscribers will be able to watch Sky Sports and Sky Movies and Virgin Media will be adding more channels in the future.

Currently, the app is only available for iOS and only two devices at a time can be registered with the service. Virgin TV Anywhere is also not technically available “anywhere” as users must be connected to the service through a wireless network. It is not supported by 3G.

The app offers live streaming of television shows. However, on-demand access is not yet available. The media organization plans to implement on-demand television sometime next year.

With the Virgin TV Anywhere, users can also use their iPads as remote controls in conjunction with TiVo in the UK. Subscribers will be able to remotely set recordings, delete shows, rate them and change the channel or adjust volume control.

As far as I know, this is a contractual issue. It took the US years to finally have the ability to stream movies and television shows the way you describe. It wasn’t technology, but network and cable companies’ desire to get a piece of the action. The same is probably true in the UK. Until Sky, Virgin Media and others can work out the deets, they will be restricted to Wi-Fi and two devices per subscription.
