Stay Social While Watching TV – Social Television Apps for the iPad

Whether you love zombies or vampires, getting together to watch your favorite shows is a lot of fun, but can be difficult to do late on a weeknight. Instead of trying to schedule a real-life get together where everyone has to squeeze onto the same couch, check out these social networking television apps that let you interact with friends and family while you watch. This way, you’ll be able to talk about the gossip of the most recent horror show while spreading out on the couch in your bunny slippers.

Zeebox (Free)This is a new app, but it is already making a splash in the App Store. Users can discover, connect, share and interact with others while watching live TV. Discover hot new shows by checking out the popular show list and add the show time to your reminder schedule. You can start a viewing party where groups can chat about what is happening during the show or send tweets, right from within the app. Users can also play interactive games about their favorite shows and unlock exclusive extra content.

GetGlue for iPad (Free) This social-networking television app lets you check in with friends and tell them what shows you are watching. Earn awards for checking in to your favorite shows, or discover new ones you may like. Based on your viewing practices, GetGlue will recommend other shows you may like. You can read discussions that take place for any given show that is currently airing.  You can also take advantage of the app’s schedule feature, which shows you the schedule for shows for the rest of the day and the upcoming week. With a little bit of research, you’ll also be able to track down some fun additional video content related to your favorite shows.

AMC Mobile for iPad (Free) AMC is really hitting it big these days with some of the most popular shows on television. With this app, you can follow along with Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Comic Book Men, and more. This second screen app lets users watch video clips, interviews, see photos, read episode recaps and more. Sync up with friends and family through Facebook and Twitter while each new episode is playing. With the Walking Dead Story Sync, you’ll be able to vote in snap polls, answer trivia questions, and watch video clips of your favorite scenes.

Miso – Social TV (Free) This app allows users to access and check in to their favorite television shows and movies and tell others about what they are watching and how they feel about it. Connect with friends that share your interests, find new friends that like the same shows as you, and earn badges for being as social as possible. You can add comments to a specific show or movie you are currently watching and see what others have to say about it, too. Once you are logged in, you’ll be able to find out what your friends are watching and join in on a show that looks interesting to you.
