Will the iPad Mini be Available in More than Two Colors?

Have you guys had a chance to take a look at Apple’s new iPod touch, which recently became available in stores? The slim device, which now comes in an array of gorgeous colors, is nothing short of sexy.

The thin design, coupled with the anodized aluminum coating in shades of gray, blue, red, pink, and green, makes this the most impressive iPod touch that Apple’s released yet. Could the company’s upcoming iPad mini be getting the same colorful treatment?

An iPad mini in an array of colors would distinguish the device from Apple’s larger iPad, as well as appeal to a larger audience. It would also allow the small tablet to stand out from its competition – after all, the Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus don’t come in a rainbow of fun colors.

Apple’s aiming to get the mini into schools and into the hands of kids and parents looking for a more portable, inexpensive device, making colors the perfect choice for the tiny tablet. What kid wouldn’t love a bright green or hot pink 7.85-inch tablet? What adult wouldn’t, for that matter?

We’ve seen rumors that there are 24 different iPad mini SKUs in store systems, and it’s not quite clear what all those different numbers are for yet.

Rumors have the iPad mini coming in two colors with four different storage sizes and three cellular versions. There’s supposed to be an 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB iPad mini, along with Wi-Fi, 3G, and LTE options. Where there’s smoke there’s usually fire, so in all likelihood, these rumors are correct, but there’s always the chance that the numbers mean something else entirely.

After all, it seems odd to release a 3G and an LTE iPad mini, and an 8GB storage size seems much too small. What if the numbers indicate a range of different colors?

If the iPad mini comes in two storage sizes (16GB and 32GB, perhaps?) along with two varieties (LTE and Wi-Fi) that means the magical number 24 could leave room for six different colors.

I’d love to see the mini released with the same design as the iPod touch, especially because they seem like sister products. The iPod touch is designed for people who need a smaller form factor, while the iPad mini is designed for those who want more screen real estate. They’re going to be priced similarly, and you know, there’s not even a confirmation that what we’re getting is an iPad mini at all. Apple could be announcing the iPod maxi, for all we know at this point.

The iPad has always had a black or white bezel, but so does the touch. It’s got a colorful aluminum shell with a white bezel, something that would work well for the mini too, allowing for fun colors without a distraction when using the tablet.

This is all in good fun, of course. While I’m hoping for an iPad mini with a candy pink shell, I’m not counting on it. But… the invitation for the event was delivered with a lovely rainbow of colors over the Apple, so there’s always the possibility!

What do you think? Would you like to see the iPad mini in black and white like its big brother, or in color? Would color options make you more likely to purchase Apple’s smaller tablet?

Multiple colors would be a logistics nightmare for production start up that is likely to have to struggle just to meet demand. For that reason it makes more sense to add colors when production capacity has met or exceeded demand: the colors pump a little more demand, and small errors in allocating production to different colors aren’t catastrophic. I too am curious about the 24 variants but don’t think colors beyond black and white are likely.
