Spiderweb Software Brings More Old School RPG Goodness to the iPad with Avernum 6 HD – iPad Game Review
Avernum 6 HD is Spiderweb’s Software’s latest release, and it is every bit as enjoyable as the first two games in the series. In this epic roleplaying adventure, players will once again travel into the familiar land of Avernum, which is ripe with dungeons, labyrinths, quests, and endless battles.
Like the other games in the series, Avernum 6 features a detailed and immersive storyline that will suck players into game. If you’ve played other titles from Spiderweb Software, slipping into the world of Avernum 6 will be easy, as the game is made in the same style.
Avernum, if you don’t already know, is a subterranean nation that’s been built in a multitude of deep, dark caverns and tunnels. As a former prison for the Empire that rules on the surface of the land, it is filled with adventurers, treasure seekers, and ever present conflict, which has been amplified by a blight that has taken over the land.
You will begin by creating your party, which consists of a soldier, a rebel, a priest, and a sorcerer. You can choose from three races for each character: human, nephil, or slithzerikai. From there, you will also select statistics, skills, and traits, which allows for deep customization of your party.
This is a serious RPG, and a far cry from the more casual games that are normally found in the App Store. If you’re new to the series, it will take some time to get into the game (it’s old school style), but if you’ve played the other two, character creation will be a breeze.
There are four difficulty levels. If you’re new to these games, you’ll likely want to pick casual, but more advanced players can choose from normal, hard, and torment. You’ll start out by learning the basics of movement, combat and item retrieval, and then you will be immersed into a series of exciting quests and adventures as you explore the story.
Movement is done with tapping, as is equipping items. I won’t go into the details of the controls, because they’re well designed, simple to figure out, and easy to use.
Combat, as in other games, is well done. It is turn based and you will select special abilities, spells, and moves to complete to win. Some battles will be difficult, and will require quite a bit of strategy before you’re able to emerge victorious. When you do win, you’ll be rewarded with plenty of loot.
Quests will come from NPCs stationed throughout the game, and will be the main way that you garner experience points for leveling your characters. They also serve as a conduit through the storyline, guiding players through the game.
Be warned: though this game has an enjoyable and deep storyline, as a classic RPG, there’s a lot of reading to be done. It’s slow paced, and while I love these type of roleplaying games, they are not for gamers who are looking for a quick fix. Avernum 6 is the type of game that you sit and play for hours and hours.
What I liked: This was a great followup to the first two Avernum games. It’s detailed, immersive, and has a fantastic UI that’s simple to use. It’s also priced right, at just $6.99, and has more than 30 hours of gameplay.
What I didn’t like: You may be underwhelmed with the content if you have played Spiderweb Software’s other titles – this game is more of the same, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you’re looking for.
To buy or not to buy: Fans of classic RPGs will want to snap this game up right away.
