The iPhone 5 was announced by Apple today, and honestly, the new phone is downright amazing, outclassing every other phone on the market. It’s got a 4-inch screen and maintains its Retina display with 326-PPI and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The new larger screen means apps can now run larger and a fifth row of app icons can be displayed on the home screen.
Screen resolution measures in at 1136×640, and the most impressive part? This new phone is both 20 percent thinner and 18 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S, making it Apple’s thinnest phone yet.
The phone supports LTE as well as 5Ghz Wi-Fi using 802.11n, for the fastest data speeds yet. Apple added LTE to the New iPad this past March and was widely expected to be included in the new iPhone 5.
Apple’s internal hardware is noteworthy as well, with an all new A6 chip that promises a 2x faster GPU and CPU, for approximately twice as much performance as the iPhone 4S. This is a huge jump, and users will see speeds go up across the board for all tasks.
In fact, the new processor was demoed playing Real Racing 3, a full console quality game capable of supporting sophisticated rendering and shading algorithms. The screen size will also lead to revamped apps, and the new camera, while using the same 8 megapixel resolution as the 4S, has notable improvements with improved low light performance, noise reduction and a sapphire crystal for improved quality. The camera also support an all new panoramic photo mode creating beautiful panoramic images up to 28 megapixel in size.
Apple also updated the iPhone’s video recording capability with the rear iSight camera capable of full 1080p recording with face detection, image stabilization and the ability to capture photos while recording video. The front facing camera now supports 720p HD video with FaceTime over cellular.
Battery life has also been improved compared to the iPhone 4s with the iPhone 5 now getting 225 hours of standby time , 8 hours talk time, 10 hours Wi-Fi browsing and 40 hours of music play time off of a single charge.
The new iPhone will be sold at the same prices under contract, beginning at $199 for the 16GB version. Pre-orders will begin on September 14, and shipments will start on September 21.
