Open Air, publishers of the popular Speakeasy Cocktails have turned their attention from the hard stuff to the fruits of the vine, and they’re looking to Kickstarter to fund Wine Simplified, a universal eBook for iOS.
Marnie Old, sommelier and author of Wine Secrets, wants to demystify wine once and for all. If funded Wine Simplified will use graphics and photos to break down the complex world of wine, even for those without a sensitive palate.
Why crowd source a book about wine? Because Ms. Old wants to bring her passion for wine to the people. Describing her project as the “Sesame Street of Wine,” Ms. Old plans to target entry level wine drinkers. Her accessible approach aims to help readers gain both knowledge and confidence when it comes to choosing wine to drink or pair with food.
Wine Simplified will cover:
- What to look for in a wine label’s small print that can give you a big hint about how it will taste.
- How to choose wines that flatter food like a pro thanks to the simple logic of sensory science, moving well beyond clichés like “white with fish, red with meat.”
- Why red wines and white wines look and taste so different (Hint: It’s not the color of the grapes!)
- How to talk about what we taste so you can feel more confident describing what you like and don’t like.

Interested backers can pledge just $15 to receive a copy of Wine Simplified for iOS, assuming the project is funded. Aspiring wine fans who donate larger amounts will receive a range of interesting thank you gifts including other Open Air titles and a hardcover copy of Wine Secrets.
Pledge before the project ends on September 14, 2012 and help Wine Simplified reach its $10,000 goal.
