Apple’s “hobby,” the Apple TV set-top box has really bloomed over the past year. With various updates, the living room gadget has made it possible for you to stream music from your iTunes library, access all of your Photo Stream pictures on your big screen TV, and mirror your iPad’s screen with only minimal lag. ATV2 and ATV3 finally got the Hulu Plus app we’ve all been waiting for in a very uneventful update last month. Today, the social networking video discovery app for the iPhone just got iPad optimization and Retina display support. Now, your iPad can be your TV’s classiest remote.
According to TechCrunch, Showyou uses Apple’s AirPlay feature to let users send videos from the iPad to Apple TV. Today’s update to version 3.4 adds features that allows you to queue up videos on your iPad, send them to Apple TV and leave the app to send a Tweet, check email, or read PadGadget’s latest news.
Multitasking is not a new feature for Apple TV and the iPad. It’s just that not many app developers are taking advantage of it. Hopefully, as devs see the benefits of adding dual-screen navigation support for Apple TV, we will see the benefits of their efforts.
If this takes off, Showyou is on track to setting the standard for video discovery apps. From the developer’s blog:
With Showyou on your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch), tens of millions of great, hand-picked videos are a tap or two away, ready to be beamed to your TV. A video shared by a friend on Facebook, or someone you follow on Showyou. Or a video from a channel like The Daily Show or Funny or Die or The Verge or TED. Or one of the 60+ million videos in our search index.
Showyou is free to download and available in the App Store today.
