Have Your Playbook At Your Fingertips with iCoach Football – iPad App Review

Whether you’re coaching the Pee Wees or the majors, a playbook is an absolute must. In the “olden days,” coaches would carry around clipboards with stacks of papers that were curling at the ends. With the advent of tablet technology, you don’t have to worry about whether you remembered to bring your playbook to the big game.

Sporting app iCoach Football lets you keep all of your game plans in one, easy to use location. Plus, you’ll look cool on the field with your iPad in hand.

The app loads a football field on the screen with 11 markers. Users move the markers, which represent players, around on the field to put them in their starting position. Drag your finger across the screen when you are not holding a marker to create a movement line. You can change the color of the line to red, green, or blue.

Once you’ve drawn up a play, save it to your playbook. You can save an unlimited number of plays to your playbook. To access them, tap the “Playbook” button at the bottom of the screen. You will see a thumbnail image of all of your plays. Scroll through them to find the right one.

Users can easily wipe the board clean of a play by shaking the iPad. This will prompt the app to reset the board, but will first ask if you really want to, just in case you accidentally shook the iPad too hard as your quarterback was running down the 50-yard line.

This app does not have very many features, but its simplicity makes it easy and convenient to use. When you are in a hurry, sometimes it is better not to have all of the bells and whistles.

What I liked: Simple to use. No fuss, no muss. You can just open and start planning without having to program or load anything.

What I didn’t like: The saved playbook lacks depth. It would be better if you could organize your playbook into different games or teams. I’d also like to see the ability to name the plays that are saved.

To buy or not to buy: Since it is free, it is worth the download. Some coaches will find its simplicity to be perfectly matched with their lack of technological skills, others will wish for something more.
