Take a Closer Look Inside Your Skull with BoneBox – iPad App Review

BoneBox - Skull ViewerDespite having asked myself from time to time whether there was anything actually inside my skull, I have truthfully been curious about the medical specifics. Using BoneBox – Skull Viewer, all users from secondary students to medical professionals can get a real-time 3D medical education from “a team of anatomists, certified medical illustrators, animators, and programmers using actual human CT imaging data, and cutting-edge 3D modeling techniques.”

Boasting an interface free from pre-rendered frames or animations, users are able to orient the 3D skull into any position and zoom toward each of the anatomical structures. Built in views also enable you to view particular areas of the skull, including: full skull normal, full skull colorized, cross-section left (lateral) normal, cross-section left (lateral) colorized, cross-section left (lateral) normal, cross-section left (lateral) colorized, cross-section right (lateral) normal, cross-section right (lateral) colorized, transverse cross-section normal and transverse cross-section colorized.

Over 100 built-in color-coded pins identify and locate bones, foramina, and prominent anatomical features making memorization and recall activities significantly easier. Once you select a pin location to view the label, it will remain on the screen to mark the areas you have already been. Are you taking a class for which there are things you need to learn that aren’t already pinned on the model? Add in your own custom pins (or draw your own lines) with any label you choose to add.

What I liked: The focus of this app is very much on learning, which makes this an ideal study guide for any person who need to absorb details on the subject matter.

What I didn’t like: While I am not certain how or where, the addition of sound effects would make the app feel more interactive. I also noticed that when using the drawing tool, there were certain areas on the model that couldn’t be written on, leaving gaps in my lines as they run over those areas.

To buy or not to buy: This is an app that is of particular use to students who need to learn and understand the anatomy of the skull.
