Whose cuisine reigns supreme? The only female Iron Chef, Cat Cora, is also a world-renowned chef, cookbook author, restaurateur and TV host (including the recent “Around the World in 80 Plates” on Bravo). Add to this list that she has a fantastic new app: Cat Cora’s Kitchen.
With access to 76 of Cat’s favorite recipes and over 20 instructional HD videos, Cat Cora’s Kitchen is the kind of cooking companion you can really rely on.
Cat Cora describes the goal of her app as wanting to make cooking and entertaining easier, and she accomplishes this with little difficulty. A good number of the recipes have instructional videos to walk you through the requisite preparation and the built-in scheduler gives you all of the tips you need to find the fastest way to create a remarkable meal.
As you browse the list of recipes, I challenge you to create a meal (which the app accommodates by letting you select a series of recipes to tie together) that only includes a few of them. Each one has a fantastic photograph that will make your mouth water and stomach grumble. My first culinary endeavor included her lemon-pecan pancakes, which ended up being a joy to make and to eat.
After you select a recipe, you will be greeted by a series of details beyond those of a regular cookbook style app. Sure it tells you how many servings you can expect to make, but it also tells you how long it will take to prepare (active time as well as the total time), how quickly you need to serve the dish and whether any portion of it can be prepared ahead of time. As a value-added feature, Cora includes a list of the cookware you are going to need for each dish –even letting you purchase the items you don’t have from her online store with a tap of your finger.
What I liked: I love that this app creates a shopping list for your complete menu, which makes it very easy to get everything you need. Even better is the feature that lets you e-mail it out (preferably to your spouse while you relax beforehand).
What I didn’t like: Besides the fact that the iPad cannot transmit scent so you can smell how wonderful these dishes truly are, and that it made me really hungry while giving it a test drive, I found the menu less than intuitive. Without tapping around I wasn’t immediately sure how to browse through the content in the app.
To buy or not to buy: If you have ever drooled over Car Cora’s creations in the kitchen stadium, this app will get you one step closer to cooking just like her.
