Fluffy Diver is a sweet endless diving game starring a fluffy and irresistably adorable harp seal. The game has a dreamlike setting with pastels, rainbows, and ever-changing environment.
There are actually quite a few of these diving games in the App Store, and this one is similar to Lil Flippers. You’ll control the seal by diving and jumping out of the water, which is by tapping and holding on the screen.
You will need to dive continually to eat shells, which restore your ever diminishing life force. You have a total of three seals, and if you do not eat enough shells to replenish yourself, the game will end.
Running into obstacles like rocks, or staying in the water too long, will also cause you to lose life quickly. When the game ends, you must start again at the beginning.
The game doesn’t have levels, but it does give you a series of objectives to complete, such as gathering 500 shells or traveling to the second ocean. Completing these objectives, and ending levels, will result in stars.
Stars can be used in the shop to buy upgrades, such as improving your seal’s ability to grab items or increasing its shield. You can also buy other adorable seals in costume, but these are expensive and will require quite a bit of gameplay.
You can buy currency using in-app purchases to buy locked items, but you also have the option of buying the $2.99 version of the game which comes with all of the characters automatically unlocked.
If you have Game Center friends with Fluffy Diver installed, their harp seals will appear during your game, so you can race alongside them.
The game has other additions, like the whale and the seagull, who will help you on your journey. Overall, though, this is not exactly a simple game. It’s pretty tough to eat enough shells to keep going, and it will take some practice to progress through the oceans.
Still, this game is cute enough that it makes playing over and over again less of a chore. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this game, and I imagine that it will be especially popular with little girls.
What I liked: This game is super cute. I love the fluffy little harp seal and his happy, colorful environment. The gameplay is also solid, though challenging.
What I didn’t like: It takes too long to earn stars to purchase items. I played several games and never earned more than 200, which isn’t enough to buy much in the game. You would have to play for an insane amount of time to earn all of the unlocks, meaning that if you want to get the most out of the game, you need to pony up some in-app cash.
To buy or not to buy: This app is currently free, so I’d check it out, especially if you like cute games or have a child who does. If you end up loving it, it may be worth the $2.99 for the paid version.
