It’s time to decide the fate of your dying world. Either you let the invading aliens destroy everything you’ve ever known, or you build a giant robot and send him into space to defeat the evil Vorag. I had my bags packed at giant robot.
Players control Gyro, a giant space-traveling robot whose job it is to destroy the Vorag before they come back to the planet of Pax and turn it into nothing but rubble. The robot has some interesting abilities and useful skills that help you on your mission.
To control Gyro’s movement, players must tilt their iPad, and even flip around so that the images are turned upside-down. Gyro can jump from one side of the screen to the other, collecting “Zero Point Energy” as he moves around. To collect energy, players must first destroy the weapons that the Vorag have sent out. Once destroyed, players can collect the energy that is left behind.
Gyro is protected inside a rectangular force field that moves through space. He uses it to help him move around. You can tap on one side of the force field and he will jump to the spot, but only if it is on the same side that he is already standing on.
Once you’ve completed a mission, the Zero Point Energy you collected can be used to buy special weapons and upgrade armor. The upgrades will help you do better on the mission.
There are three levels of difficulty. The harder the game, the more Zero Energy Points you earn. Players can change the difficulty of their game anytime by tapping the icon in the upper-right corner of the screen when at the game’s menu.
There are also three different game slots so you can play one campaign while your annoying brother plays another. You can play the campaign with missions, or try your skills at endless mode.
This arcade game is very unique. It offers classic arcade style shooting with tilt-based movement controls in a plot-rich story for fans of sci-fi and giant robots. Learning how to move Gyro around can be a bit awkward, you don’t just tilt your ipad. You actually have to flip it around. However, the game is so exciting that you can easily overlook the minor inconvenience of having to move your iPad around so much.
What I liked: The arcade style shooting makes this game very exciting. It has plenty of challenges that get harder as the game progresses. The giant-robot-in-space theme is also a plus for fans of science fiction.
What I didn’t like: The in-between game storyline moves excruciatingly slow. You can’t tap past the dialog. It takes forever to get to the next level. I’d like to see the option to skip dialog in between levels. The game doesn’t run in the background so if you have to shut the app for any reason, you start at the main menu again when you reopen it.
To buy or not to buy: This game is only $0.99, which is nothing less than a bargain. If you like arcade shooters and are looking for a space-themed adventure with a giant robot, you’ve found the right game.
