Kids Learn Their Letters with Cartoon ABC — iPad App Review

Cartoon ABC joins the ever-growing field of apps that help children learn their ABCs.

This universal app from Kids Academy modernized the timeless practice of learning letters through colorful digital cards that include enough interactivity to keep kids interested. It isn’t so busy, however, that kids will lose sight of the app’s main goal, which is to teach them to recognize letters by their shape and sound.

Begin exploring Cartoon ABC by creating a profile for your child. Cartoon ABC lets the user snap a photo with the iPad camera or upload a picture from the tablet’s album.

Next the child can visit the home screen, which features an illustrated card for every one of the alphabet’s letters.

Each letter makes its own memorable entrance. For example, V erupts from a volcano and E pops out of the cracked shell of a dropped egg. The app’s humor and frivolity encourage repeat play and hold a child’s interest long enough for him to learn his letters.

A user can proceed from A to Z using the arrow keys, but he can also go backward or return to the main menu and pick a new letter. Once a child visit the letter once the it’s revealed on the card on the home screen. Consonants are blue while vowels are orange, which will probably lead the curious child to ask, “Mommy, why are the letters different colors?”

Though it’s regularly priced at $2.99, users can download Cartoon ABC for free from the App Store for a limited time.

What I liked: It was nice to be able to enjoy the cards out of order. While it’s obvious that kids need to learn the alphabet from A to Z, Cartoon ABC gives kids a chance to explore the letters.

What I didn’t like: Though the app’s concept is strong the artwork was uninspired and even boring at times. I wish I could mute the music without going into settings, although once you’re looking at a letter you can access settings without returning to the main menu. While it may appeal to some, I thought a parents’ center for such a simple app was not necessary.

To buy or not to buy: While Cartoon ABC offers no real surprises, it is obvious that the developers put a lot of thought into the app’s construction. The app is currently free, so get it today before the price returns to $2.99.
