Dead Trigger is Now Free to Play – iPad Game Review

When Madfinger Games released the Android version of its hit zombie shooter Dead Trigger in the Google Play Store, it said that so many people were pirating its $0.99 game that it made more since to release the game as a free app with in-app purchases instead.

Today, the app was updated, making it free in the iOS App Store as well. While piracy is not as rampant on Apple’s devices, many people do download apps for free after jailbreaking their devices. The switch to freemium, though disappointing, will almost certainly result in more revenue for Madfinger Games, thanks to in-app purchases, which are much more difficult to illegally acquire.

Developers deserve to get paid for their work, so it’s understandable why Madfinger games switched to a freemium model, which has proven time and time again to be the most successful way to sell an app.

If you haven’t played Dead Trigger before, now is a great time to download it. Though it’s freemium, it isn’t one of the freemium games that requires in-app purchases to progress.

The game if is first person zombie shooter that’s rather adult oriented, with tons of blood and guts plus an array of fun zombie slaying weapons, like chain saws, machine guns, and more. It’s a total kill or be killed game.

There are tons of weird zombie creatures to defeat and plenty of well-designed in game areas to explore while you blast away, including an underground car park and a research institute.

Control wise, there is nothing to complain about. This is a dual stick first person shooter, with a virtual left joystick. You can touch anywhere on the left screen to move, and turning and firing are done on the right side of the screen. There’s also a button to zoom in with a gun scope.

The game has a lot of fun gadgets and extra weapons you can buy. You earn cash in the game by slaying zombies, and while you can buy currency and items in-app, it’s totally unnecessary.

Yes, the game will be a bit harder and it will take longer to finish, but for a lot of people, that makes it more of a challenge and thus more fun to play.

Graphically, this game is impressive. It has fully 3D characters and environments with a lot of detail and realistic character animations with great ragdoll effects. It is, in fact, amazing that such a game can be delivered to players for free.

Mission objectives keep the game interesting, moving you from location to location. At times, you’ll need to complete missions like protecting a particular area, or moving from one location to another. There are also fun extras like slot machines to play with between missions.

The game has full Game Center support, with both leaderboards and plenty of achievements to earn, so it will keep you busy for quite some time.

If you enjoy zombie slaughtering games and first person shooters, I’d highly suggest checking out Dead Trigger. It’s a solid title that’s entirely free, lots of fun to play, and highly challenging.

What I liked: This is a solid shoot ’em up game with great graphics, an entertaining soundtrack, and addictive zombie slaughtering gameplay.

What I didn’t like: I’m not a fan of the freemium model, but I appreciate when games do it well. Dead Trigger doesn’t make its in-app purchases essential, which is nice.

To buy or not to buy: Since Dead Trigger is available for free, checking it out will only cost you time, not money. Give it a look if you like zombie shooters.
