It’s the age old story: princess is captured by a big and scary, fire-breathing dragon and guarded by a bunch of idiot knights in a poorly built tower while the catapult takes on a life of its own and saves the day. Okay, perhaps Catapult King is a bit of a twist on the traditional tale, but it’s definitely whimsical and it’s definitely fun to play.
Take control of the catapult and using a series of cannon balls and power-ups you must endeavor to save the princess from whatever fate may meet her if she is forced to stay with the dragon.
If you manage to knock the tower town entirely and eliminate all of the knights, you can move on to the next level. If you fail, the remaining nights will taunt and tease you (and find you simultaneously laughing at and angry with them). As with many games of this type, the first few levels are really easy before becoming exponentially more difficult.
It actually feels a little like this game has true emotions. When you do especially well on a level, it celebrates with you (catchy little tunes play and you get extra animations). It is this enthusiasm that keeps you playing ‘just one more level’ and never seeming to put this app down.
The further into the game you get, the more magic you earn with which to enchant your catapult and solve the puzzles on the subsequent levels.
What I liked: The first thing to hit me with this game were the incredible graphics. With an opening intro animation that reminded me of the old days when I played a lot of Super Mario on one Nintendo machine or another… making me feel even more with games of this quality like the iPad is becoming a gaming machine to be reckoned with.
What I didn’t like: The on-screen hints are very nice as you play the game, but I wish there was a quick tutorial to get your started (or at least a few brief instruction to make clear what needs to be done).
To buy or not to buy: This app is a bargain for the regular $0.99 price-tag, but is a steal being that it is free right now –grab it quickly!
