If you’re not familiar with Downhill Xtreme, it was the first longboard racing game to hit the App Store. Since its release, its been downloaded more than two million times, and for good reason – this is one fun extreme sports app.
In this game, you’ll race your way through exotic locations as you battle challengers and the clock to make it to the top of the charts. Do you have what it takes to be a pro longboarder?
When you start the game, you’ll be prompted to create your first basic board. From there, you can customize your rider, choosing from male or female and picking your hairstyle.
This game uses tilt motion controls, so you will tilt your iPad left and right to steer. It only takes slight movements, and it’s easy to do, unlike most tilt motion games. You’ll press on the left side of the screen to brake and the right side to tuck, which increases your speed.
The game comes with great sound effects and a full soundtrack from the latest indie bands, so you can rock out to heart pumping to music while you race. You’ll need to qualify, hitting a certain time, before you can enter each race, which may take some practice.
These racing tracks are filled with twists and turns, so you’ll need to be quick in order to make it to the finish line without crashing.
Winning races and thus progressing through the championship will earn you coins, which you can use to buy new boards and upgrades to your wheels. You can also buy coins in the app, which is encouraged because this is a freemium game.
Better gear, of course, makes the game easier. Your wheels degenerate after a few races eating up your proceeds, so it would be nice to earn a bit more from races. In its current incarnation, it’s tough to progress through the game without spending real cash.
As the game goes on, you’ll enter new races and learn fresh moves, like drifting, which requires a sudden tilt of the iPad and a finger on the brake button.
This new update also added several multiplayer features to the game, revamping the online events to allow players to choose opponents in an array of categories including world’s best, local, and skill level.
The developers also added several new songs from artists like We Outspoken, Kidd Russell, and The Clench, plus an all new golden Spartan board with awesome specs.
All in all, this was a great game before the update, and now there’s even more fun content.
What I liked: The tilt motion controls in this game are spot on. Easy to use, sensitive, and a joy to play with.
What I didn’t like: This is a freemium game, so there’s a definite focus on buying coins. You don’t earn coins fast enough from simply playing the game to earn upgrades.
To buy or not to buy: If you’re a fan of racing games, this is a good title to try. If you’ve played before, give it another go, there are quite a few new features to check out.
