Children Will Love Finding Creatures in Hiding Monsters – iPad App Review

Hiding Monsters is a heartwarming children’s tale featuring a group of monsters that are more interested in laughs than screams.

This fun interactive book has a hidden monster on every page, plus simple navigation, lots of surprises, and great rhyming narration.

Opening the app begins the story, which starts with Mookie the monster who explains that monsters are all over the place, and must be found. Children are encouraged to tap items in each interactive story page, opening doors and peeking in boxes as they go on a fun monster hunt.

The narration on each page is enunciated clearly and easy to understand. Words are also displayed on the page so children can read along, and the narrator can be turned off entirely if children would rather have a parent read or read to themselves.

This story is actually narrated by Tom Kenny, who does the voice of the famous Spongebob Squarepants, so children with a keen ear will be delighted. It also features original music, which can be turned off in the options menu.

For smaller children, you can turn on hints, which will help them find monsters. Slightly older children can get more of a challenge by turning them off when the story starts.

This app does not have particularly impressive graphics, but the monsters are adorable and the fun story makes up for the lackluster (and non-Retina) visuals.

The app includes many popular monsters, such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, dragons, and the Tooth Fairy, among others. If you’re worried about this being a scary app, it’s not! Kids will have a great time seeking out monsters.

What I liked: This interactive story is a lot of fun. Monsters are cleverly hidden, and it’s quite a delight when they pop out after being found.

What I didn’t like: Interactive elements in the story that I tapped on were often a bit slow to respond to touch. There was a slight delay, for example, when opening drawers. The app does not have Retina graphics, so it is not crisp on Apple’s newest iPad.

To buy or not to buy: I enjoyed this app, but if you’re the type of person that must have Retina graphics on the iPad (I know I am) I’d wait for an update before downloading. If you’re using this on an older iPad or an iPhone, it’s a great story to buy for kids.
