Tentacle Wars HD is a strategy game that takes a bit of mathematical understanding along with a lot of puzzle solving skills. Battle microscopic cells as they try to invade a dying alien and save the entire species with the stretch of your tentacles.
Players are in control of the antibody cells. The goal is to turn all cells on the board into good, or green ones. To do so, an antibody cell must transfer its own DNA into the red and blue cells with tentacles that reach out and attach themselves. The antibody cell must be stronger than the bad cell or the latter will take over and turn all cells into mutations.
To start the process, drag your finger from the green cell to the red or blue one. If your cell has a maximum power capacity of 30 and the bad cell only has 10, then the fight is simple. You can “cut the cord” and transfer all DNA at once to speed the process along. Once all cells on the board are green, you’ve successfully completed the mission and move on to another level.
Sometimes, there are neutral cells that you’ll want to transfer antibody DNA to. There are two reasons for this. The first is that, additional green cells will help you fight off the bad cells. The second is that if you don’t control the neutral cells, the bad guys will.
There are times when the bad cells are stronger than the good ones and you will have to figure out how to transfer DNA between cells by creating a chain. When you link multiple antibody cells together, they create a stronger bond, making it possible to overpower the bad cells.
Players must earn 60 stars in order to unlock the second world. There is a maximum of three stars possible in each level. There are 40 levels across two worlds with promise of more to come. The first 10 levels are fairly simple, but the game becomes significantly more challenging toward the end of the first world. Earning the requisite 60 stars becomes more difficult with each new level.
What I liked: This is a complex strategy game that requires players to think on their toes. Not only do you have to be able to overpower the cell, you have to accomplish it fast and in the least amount of moves possible.
What I didn’t like: Players should be able to unlock the second world earlier. The attempt to earn 60 stars gets daunting once you realize how hard it is to complete levels.
To buy or not to buy: Absolutely. The price is more than reasonable, especially if new worlds become available in future updates.
