iPad App Review: Improve Your Athlete’s Techniques in Real Time with Coach’s Eye

Coach’s Eye is an app that’s designed for coaches, providing a great way to improve your team’s skills and technique in any sport, from baseball and soccer to golf and weightlifting.

With this app, you can record slow motion video on the field, capturing your athlete’s performance for immediate analysis and review, which allows you to correct flaws on the spot.

The app opens with a sample video, which allows you to explore everything Coach’s Eye can do, though you can also open immediately to capture mode by tapping on the camera icon that’s located in the top left of the screen.

Coach’s Eye has a simple recording mode, so just hit the red button and aim your iPad at the subject. You can turn on a grid or use the front or back facing cameras, but those are your only options.

After you’ve recorded a video, you’re able to analyze it. In analysis mode, you can view the video at regular speed or in slow motion, and using a slider bar at the bottom, you can target specific areas in the video that need improvement.

To illustrate your input, you can use the included drawing tools to mark the video in any spot, which is super handy for pointing out flaws in technique and for demonstrations.

You can draw with lines or arrows, both of which allow you to clearly illustrate your teaching points. There’s also a straight line tool, and tools for drawing both squares and circles. If you hold down on a tool, you can change its color, using red, blue, green, yellow, or white.

Clearing your drawings and moving on to another part of the video is as simple as tapping the “clear” button.

Adding an audio voice over is also one of the app’s features, and this allows you to give athletes even more feedback on their performance, while allowing you to make personal notes for later review.

In addition to analyzing your videos, you can share them with other users if you sign up for an account. If every member on the team signs up for a free account, sharing videos is simple and quick. You can also share videos using YouTube and Dropbox.

You can even share your videos on the big screen using a TV or a projector with AirPlay and Apple TV, making this app perfect for any size team.

This app is perfect for coaches, parents, athletes, and anyone who wants to improve their technique, in sports, in fitness, or in any other physical field.

What I liked: This is a straightforward app that’s very useful for any type of coach. Both the iPad 2 and the newest iPad record clear video, allowing this app to replace expensive cameras and computer equipment.

What I didn’t like: To save a video to your camera roll, you must enter an email address, signing up for the online service. The app also does not export in HD, which is a negative if you want to use your videos off of the iPad.

To buy or not to buy: Whatever you coach, from little league to the Olympics, this app is a great solution for giving feedback to athletes. At just $4.99, it’s a reasonably priced, ultra-useful tool.
