Take a Trip To The Most Romantic City in the World with Pinball City Paris HD – iPad Game Review

Pinball City Paris HD is more than just a pinball app. It is a romantic vacation in the City of Light. Take a trip to the Eiffel Tower, the Basilica, the Louvre and many other familiar landmarks with Muriel as you bounce, shoot and ricochet your way through the streets of Paris.

The app’s development team, AnotherWay2Play is making a name for themselves for their highly stylized pinball games. Their first release, Pinball City NY centered on a washed up detective trying to save a dame from a giant gorilla in a noir-style pinball adventure. Pinball City Paris HD plays similarly to its predecessor but tells the story of love instead.

As you keep the pinball rolling through the city streets, the story of American student Roger unfolds. He visits the Louvre, is thwarted by police while feeding pigeons and meets a young French woman named Muriel who agrees to show him around.

The highly stylized graphics remind me of comic book artists Darwyn Cooke. The imagery is subtly cute with a sense of playfulness. The sound effects in the background tell Roger’s story. For example, when the pinball is bouncing around the Eiffel Tower, you will hear him say, “I’ve heard the original is in Las Vegas.” When you lose a ball and start another turn, he will say, “Garson! More Champagne.”

The gameplay is very smooth and offers fairly realistic physics. There is a “nudge” feature that lets you simulate the effects of bumping the table. If you nudge too often, you will tilt the game and lose a ball.

For serious pinball players, this game can be a little frustrating because the ball tends to shoot directly through the center, missing the flippers entirely, more often than would happen in real life. The flippers are fairly responsive but still set off just a tick too slowly.

Players can change the camera angle to three different viewing options. Two of them are ball-follow cameras, which I’ve always found to be difficult, and one is stationary, which I prefer because it is more realistic. Unfortunately, you miss all of the amazing graphics when you play the game with the stationary camera angle. The images are just too far away.

What I liked: The highly stylized art makes this game charming and lighthearted.

What I didn’t like: The responsiveness of the flipper action is just a tad slow. Even with all of my background apps closed, I still experienced minor lag.

To buy or not to buy: The price is reasonable and the game is very entertaining. If you enjoy a casual game of pinball, this is fun for the whole family.
