Everything seems to be turning undead these days. People aren’t the only ones susceptible to the desire to return from the grave. It turns out, birds can catch zombie fever, too.
In Shoot the Zombirds, these foul fowl prefer innocent pumpkin babies to good old-fashioned brains. You’d better get your bow and arrows ready if you want to save the poor little squashes. Players must shoot down various “Zombirds” that fly overhead.
They move at different speeds and some of them are carrying away little “Pumpkids,” who incidentally are screaming for help as they are flown to their demise. In order to save the Pumpkids, or just shoot down a random Zombird, tap and drag the screen. To aim, keep your finger on the screen and move from left to right. To shoot, let go and the arrow will fly in the direction you aimed.
When every you see a Zombird with a Pumpkid in its claws, make sure to shoot it down. Players have a limited number of babies and once they are all snatched up, the game is over.
Players start off with only three arrows. When an arrow hits its target, the player gets it back. If an arrow flies, but never makes contact, it is lost in the woods. If you run out of arrows, your game ends. You can store up additional arrows by hitting two birds with one “stone,” so to speak. If your arrow hits multiple birds, you earn an extra arrow.
Players can buy additional starting arrows with coins that are earned during game play. To start with four instead of three, you will only need 100 coins, but to get five starting arrows, you’ll need to pony up an additional 500 coins.
Luckily, coins are plentiful. To collect them, simply shoot down the floating skulls that appear whenever you kill a Zombird. Basically, you have to kill it twice if you want to loot it.
This arcade shooter is a lot of fun with a spooky theme. Players can buy cool items for coins, which can be bought with in-app purchases or earned. The coins flow plenty, so you don’t feel like you have to buy to play.
What I liked: Sometimes, when you save a Pumpkid, he says “thank you,” and it sounds so cute.
What I didn’t like: Nothing. This is a great casual game for a very low price.
To buy or not to buy: Fans of arcade shooters should definitely pick this one up.
