Avoid Rocks, Burning Logs and Piranhas While Escaping to Freedom in Chasing Yello
Chasing Yello is a tilt motion, endless runner where the goal is to control a fish, pick up stars and avoid obstacles while trying to get the highest score possible.
Brave Yello has escaped from the clutches of his owner, Mathilda, into the local creek. It’s a dangerous world out there though, and Yello needs help escaping from rocks, logs, piranhas, and Mathilda’s net.
Yello is controlled by tilting your iPad to move him left and right in the stream. You’ll need to watch carefully for rocks and other obstacles, because it’s the end of the road for Yello if he gets injured.
The tilt motion controls are well calibrated and easy to use. You’ll also need to jump and dive to keep safe, which is done by swiping up for a jump, or swiping down for a dive, and can by done anywhere on the screen. Yello will need to jump over rocks, but dive under burning logs.
It’s not exactly easy to tilt and swipe at the same time, so there is a bit of a learning curve to this game. If you can master the controls, though, it is a lot of fun. The game starts out slowly enough, but as it speeds up, you will be swiping and tilting furiously to keep up.
The stars that you collect while playing are used to purchase power ups from the shop. These power ups do things like increase your speed (rocket) or allow you to pick up stars more easily (magnet).
You can also purchase additional abilities for Yello, such as a super jump, which is executed with a double swipe or a dodge, which is done by swiping left or right. These abilities are expensive, and you will need to play quite a few games before being able to purchase them. Alternatively, you can buy additional stars within the app.
There are goals to complete, such as getting a certain number of stars or going a set distance, and completing these goals will increase your ranking. There are also detailed statistics within the game, so you know exactly how well you are doing, plus Game Center integration provides competitive leader boards so you can compete with other players around the world.
All in all, Chasing Yello is a solid endless runner that fans of the genre will enjoy. Those of you who like Jetpack Joyride and Temple Run will find similar gameplay in Chasing Yello.
What I liked: Chasing Yello’s gameplay is fast paced, varied, and plenty of fun.
What I didn’t like: The graphics are not Retina, so this game does not look crisp on the third generation iPad.
To buy or not to buy: Chasing Yello is a solid endless runner that’s worth the $0.99 download if you have an original iPad or an iPad 2. I’d suggest waiting for an update before downloading this on the newest iPad.
