Shoot Up Aliens and Customize Your Weapons in Planet Wars

Planet Wars is a top-down alien shooter game that is perfect for those of you who are fans of retro-styled dual stick shooters.

In Planet Wars, players are tasked with destroying aliens in order to earn credits to buy new weapons and weapon upgrades.

The game starts out with a tutorial, which introduces players to the controls. This is a dual stick shooter, so the movement button is on the left, while shooting and aiming are controlled with the right stick.

These controls are decent, but definitely not as fluid as some other dual stick shooters that I’ve played. It’s a bit difficult to execute both movement and aimed shooting simply because the controls are not as responsive as they could be.

Planet Wars has retro-style graphics, which are well done and fun to look at while playing. I enjoyed the pixellated spiders and the well-designed comic-like backgrounds.

The main goal in this game is to kill stuff to earn money. Every time you slaughter an alien you’ll get a small amount of credit, which is used before each mission to purchase new items.

A detailed weapon upgrade system is where Planet Wars really shines. Every weapon in the game has five different upgradeable parts, allowing players to customize guns to exacting play styles.

The game has more than 70 different items and components in total, with 17 core weapons ranging from rifles to flame throwers.

There are ten campaigns to complete, plus a survival mode, along with Game Center achievements and leaderboards for plenty of gameplay.

What I liked: Planet Wars has a good concept and appealing art, which made it fun to play.

What I didn’t like: I felt like the game was too slow paced and the controls weren’t up to par. I also thought that compared to other shooters of this type, gameplay started out slightly too hard.

To buy or not to buy: If you’re a fan of dual stick shooters and like to support indie games, I highly suggest picking up Planet Wars.
