Zombie Quest HD for iPad is a Virtual Board Game That’s Fun for the Whole Family

Zombie Quest HD is a fun zombie-themed board game that’s simple to play, but complex to master. It’s played a bit like chess or checkers, in that there are no pesky dice or cards to bother with.

Instead, you will control one set of monsters on the board while your opponent controls another, with the goal of having the most monsters on the board at the end of the game.

You can move in two ways in Zombie Quest. Your monsters can move one space, which will clone them and morph any of the enemy monster on the nearby squares, or two spots to overtake more space on the board. Moving two spots does not clone your monster to add another unit to the board, but it does convert enemy units.

The game goes in turns, and you can move one monster per turn. You will often need to strategize the best place to move to convert the most enemies or to block said enemies from converting your own pieces. The game ends when the board is full or when there are no more moves to make.

This game can be played against the computer with increasing difficulty, or against another player, where you will pass the iPad back and forth between turns on your choice of unlocked boards.

Playing with the computer and playing with an opponent are equally fun. The computer can be challenging, but it is not too difficult to progress through the levels. It’s also fun with another person, because you never know how a game will turn out.

Different boards are unlocked as you finish levels against the computer, and they get increasingly harder, thanks to the addition of fire pits, which randomly destroy the units standing on them, opening the board for new moves.

The game adds special abilities to spice things up, which can be used one or more times per level based on difficulty. These abilities include shield, which will protect one unit for five turns, and crank, which grabs a unit and removes it from the battlefield.

New special abilities are earned from defeating monsters that possess the ability. Once the level is finished, you will absorb the power and will be able to use it in subsequent levels.

Zombie Quest is a fun game, and it’s a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a game that the whole family can play. It’s easy enough for children to play, but complex enough that adults are entertained as well.

What I liked: This is a classic game with a great theme. It’s a lot of fun to play.

What I didn’t like: I experienced several crashes and bugs on my third generation iPad, and one of them is so severe that it has prevented me from continuing on with the game. During the Mortuary levels, though I beat the enemy, the game did not end. It got stuck, and I was forced to replay. My game also continually crashes during the third Mortuary level, and I am not able to progress.

To buy or not to buy: While I would recommend this game, I would not recommend purchasing it until there is an update to fix the bugs.
