In iOS 6, the Podcast section has mysteriously gone missing from the iTunes iOS application. According to All Things D, this is because Apple plans to create a standalone app for podcasts, making it easier for users to find, acquire, and play new podcast content.
With iOS 5, all podcasts are viewed and downloaded using the iTunes application, but the iOS version, unlike the desktop version of iTunes, does not have functionality to allow users to subscribe to podcasts or to automatically download new podcasts that they subscribe to.
That’s set to change with the new podcast application, which will be a centralized location for downloading and managing podcast content, as well as playing it back.
Podcasts are moving to their own iOS app, but podcast subscribers who access them through their computers will still be able to download and manage content in iTunes.
iOS 6 is currently available for beta testers, but will be made available to the general public this fall, with the new podcasting application.
