Popcorn, peanuts, elephants, and clowns. Everyone loves the circus, right? In Circus Atari, a revamp of the original game from the Atari 2600, you’ll get to experience silly circus fun right from your living room
This clown-themed casual game has easy to use tilt motion controls, making it the perfect choice for the entire family.
In this game, you’ll tap to launch a colorful clown from a cannon. Once the clown is flying through the air, you need to tilt your iPad left or right to land on balloons, bouncing platforms, and pegs to propel the clown skyward.
The goal is to get as high as possible, while gathering up gold and silver coins. It will take some skill to hit those balloons, which are placed far apart. If you don’t manage to hit a balloon, you’ll be prompted to deploy a net to keep your clown from falling to the ground.
When you send out a net, your clown will be flung skywards, helping you reach even greater heights. At the beginning of the game, you’re given five nets, but after that, you will need to use the coins that you’ve gathered while playing to buy more nets.
Of course, since this is a free game, nets are expensive. It takes quite a few games to gather enough coins to buy nets, so be prepared to grind through lots of balloon bouncing or shell out real cash for coins.
As you fly through the air aiming for balloons and coins, you may be able to grab a power up or two, which will help you along on your journey. The gameplay is endless, so you can keep on going and going, plus there are plenty of achievements to earn.
The graphics in Circus Atari are bright, colorful, cartoony, and fun to look at, and the circus-themed music fits in perfectly. It’s a lot of fun to play, but I do wish there was more free gameplay available.
What I liked: This is an easy to play game that kids and adults alike will enjoy playing. Hand your iPad over to the kids on a car trip or a doctor’s office visit and clown launching will keep them busy for quite awhile. Make sure to turn off those in-app purchases, though.
What I didn’t like: Nets, the saving mechanism in this game, are necessary to progress unless you’re an absolute wiz at Atari Circus. Games will end quickly without them, and the nets are way overpriced. 5 nets costs 2,000 coins, but a $0.99 in-app purchase only gives you 1,500 coins. That’s enough for three nets, which can easily be used in a single game. It’s an absolutely ridiculous pricing scheme.
To buy or not to buy: Download this to play for free, but don’t invest any cash in the app. You won’t be getting enough for your money, and there are plenty of other apps out there that give you a lot more content for $0.99.
