This is a bright and cheery game where the goal is to solve puzzles and navigate your truck around the field in order to plant as many trees as possible.
The game has a short tutorial and it’s easy to pick up the gameplay and the controls, but tough to master. Gameplay consists of dragging a path around a barren field for the tractor to follow. He’ll plow the path, and plant trees behind him. You can’t go backwards – only forwards, so you must plan your path carefully at the start of each level. As the game progresses, you’ll also have obstacles like ponds to avoid. Falling into a pond is game over, because it turns your tractor into a wet pile of rust.
Planting trees in all of the available space in each level will earn you a star, as will completing the level in a set amount of time. You’ll also get a star from mowing down the poor mole in each level (don’t worry, he always comes back for more!).
The time limits are brutal to achieve, so you’ll likely need to replay each level several times in order to get the movements down and done in the fastest time possible. Levels start out simply with just a few curves, but soon, you’ll be plowing maze-like fields that take some serious brain power to map out. Luckily there’s a quick restart button if you make a mistake, which makes replaying levels a breeze.
As you plow the fields, you’ll pick up corn. Corn is the currency in the game, and it can be used to purchase items from the item shop.
Items do things like buy extra item slots, add a move queue so you can map out more than one move at once, speed up your tractor, add more time, and add hints to the game. If you run out of corn to buy items and don’t want to work for it, you can buy it from the shop as an in-app purchase.
All of those stars that you pick up are used to unlock new levels and new game areas, and it takes quite a few stars to get those unlocks. In fact, I think it may take just a few too many right now, so hopefully the game developers will adjust that difficulty curve a bit to make the game suitable for younger players too.
Tractor Trails is surprisingly challenging, but it’s also a lot of fun. I loved the cute, colorful tractors and the increasingly difficult puzzles. The game has more than 130 levels, iCloud support so you can play on multiple devices, and plenty of achievements to earn.
What I liked: Tractor Trails has a fun concept and great puzzle gameplay. Puzzle fans are really going to like this one. I also love when developers are thorough enough to include both Game Center integration and cloud support.
What I didn’t like: I wish that the clock wouldn’t start until I made my first move so that I could have some time to examine the level before having to start right away. That would probably save me some restarting time without affecting the gameplay. I also think that the difficulty is a little high right now – it should take a few less stars to progress through the game.
To buy or not to buy: This is a fun little puzzle game that’s priced right at $0.99.
