Kitchen Guru Demystifies Ingredients — iPad App Review

If you’ve ever wondered how long blackberries will keep in the fridge, or how many ways there are to cook a rutabaga, then consider adding Kitchen Guru to your iOS app cooking library. Kitchen Guru is designed to help users learn how to select, store and cook 88 different fruits and vegetables and 36 grains.

This universal app was designed by solo developer Jacob Hull, a rocket scientist (no fooling!) who volunteers at his local CSA and cooked up Kitchen Guru in his spare time.

Kitchen Guru’s UI is basic, but still fully functional. Although there are a few recipes in the app, it is not a digital cookbook per se. Rather it is a portable food encyclopedia that currently covers fruit and vegetables as well as grains. (The developer plans to add meat in a future update.)

Kitchen Guru tries to take some of the mystery out of the incredible range of ingredients from apples to zucchini (and everything in between) that we are fortunate enough to find in our supermarkets and farmer’s markets.

By marking which ingredients are in season, shoppers are more likely to buy food when its at the peak of its flavor, has the highest nutritional value, and the lowest cost.

Download Kitchen Guru from the App Store for $1.99.

What I liked: Kitchen Guru makes it more likely that I’ll pick up turnips, persimmons, fresh chestnuts or whatever looks really fresh at the market because I can check my iDevice on the spot to see just what do with those unusual ingredients.

What I didn’t like: I would have liked it if there were also pictures of the grains. I’m still wondering what Oat Groats look like.

To buy or not to buy: Home cooks who are partial to cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients will definitely find Kitchen Guru to be a useful. While the app isn’t full of digital bells and whistles, it doesn’t really need them. It’s priced appropriately for what it offers. If everyone who buys the app integrates one new food into their diet, then the app will be a runaway success. Now, go eat some vegetables!
