A couple of months ago, Warner Bros. Interactive gave us the coolest arcade app to hit the App Store so far, Midway Arcade. When the low-cost retro game app was released, many were saying it was what Atari’s Greatest Hits should have been. They were right. The only thing missing from Midway Arcade was iCade compatibility.
Today, our dreams come true. The best retro game app for the iPad just got better.
The iCade, for those that have not yet heard about it, is a display case for the iPad that looks like a tabletop arcade cabinet. There are lots of games that include iCade compatibility, but Atari was the first to partner with the creators of the gamer cabinet. Having Midway Games part of the mix makes my frivolous purchase so much more justified now.
When I reviewed Midway Arcade in February, the only complaint I had was that the virtual joystick was awkward because the movement circumference was too wide. According to the update summary, that problem has been fixed. The controls are now “more intuitive.”
Version 1.0.1 includes the following updates for free:
Get ready to mash some buttons as you enjoy your favorite Midway classics as they were originally played. iCade evokes classic coin-operated nostalgia complete with joystick, retro painted cabinet, and now 12 of some of the most popular games from gaming legend Midway.
IMPROVEMENTS WITH CONTROLS
Shatter high scores in Midway Arcade with new, more intuitive controls.
FIXED SPY HUNTER THEME LOOPING BUG
Elude enemy agents in Spy Hunter to the classic theme song used in the original.
ADDED D-PAD FOR ROOT BEER TAPPER
Keep the drinks coming and earn a handsome tip in Root Beer Tapper with added D-pad support.
FIXED CRASHING PROBLEMS ON START UP AND WITH DLC
Play all your favorite Midway titles anywhere with improved stability and performance.
If you don’t already own the iCade, you’d better order one now. Once word gets out that Midway Arcade is compatible with it, there will probably be a waiting list to buy one.
