Scanner Pro is an app that turns your iPhone or your iPad into a fully fledged portable scanner. Forget messing with expensive printers and stand alone scanners, for less than $10, you can scan all of your documents quickly and easily with just an iDevice.
This app will scan any kind of document, from checks and files to whiteboards, notes, and photos. It is capable of handling multipage documents and has a great organizational system to keep things in order.
Scanning a document is as easy as opening the app, tapping the camera button, and pointing your iPad or your iPhone at the document that you want to scan.
When you’ve got your document on the screen, tap the camera button again to capture the image. After your image has been scanned (aka photographed) you can use the included tools to crop your image, cutting out any excess information that may have been captured in the photo, so you’re left with just a plain document.
This cropping feature is the main reason why Scanner Pro is better for capturing documents than simply taking a photo. When you have the parameters selected for your document, you can choose to keep in full color photo mode or use document mode to create an image that creates a traditional scanned or copied style image, or grayscale, which does the same thing in black and white.
Both the contrast and the brightness can be manipulated in document and grayscale mode to create a scanned image that is clear and easily readable. All scanned images are saved as industry standard PDFs, which makes them easy to share.
Scanner Pro allows you to scan multiple pages with no problem, and it organizes the scans into a single document. All of your documents are stored on the main file page, so you can create separate folders for things like receipts and notes, keeping everything organized by name or by date. You can also easily search through your documents to find exactly what you’re looking for.
Your scans can be saved to the photo album, printed, shared via email, opened in other apps, or uploaded to Dropbox, Google Docs, or Evernote.
What I liked: The app works great on my new iPad, which has a much improved camera. It’s perfect for capturing clear images of documents, and I was impressed with the speed of the app.
What I didn’t like: This is an expensive app that’s honestly just a glorified camera. Though the crop features and the auto save as a PDF are handy, this app feels overpriced. I was also concerned with the app’s edge auto detection, which did not seem to work.
To buy or not to buy: If you only need to grab an image every once in awhile, I don’t recommend buying a $6.99 app when the iPad or iPhone’s camera will work just fine. However, if you regularly scan documents for work or like to keep track of things like receipts, then this app is a good way to do that.
