Bounty Bots is a multiplayer shoot ‘em up western style game, starring robots equipped with wild and zany weapons and powers. The goal in this game is to collect as many coins as possible, depositing them in safes and banks, while avoiding enemy fire and taking out other bots for bonus coins.
Since this is an online game, you will need a 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connection in order to play. There is no single player mode, and you can’t play offline.
This game has gorgeous Retina graphics that look great on the new iPad. Both the robots and the wild west surroundings look fantastic and as realistic as robots in the west can look.
Your bot’s movement is controlled with dual sticks, one of that moves the bot and one that turns the bot. This control scheme works fairly well, but since the camera doesn’t move up and down like in a typical shooting game, it’s a bit hard to get used to.
There are coins scattered all over the level, and it’s your job to snap them up. Of course, other players will be after your coins, and if you’re holding a lot, they can be stolen. You can also steal other player’s coins by shooting them down.
While you gather coins, you’ll need to watch out for other players and battle furiously as you make your way to a safe to drop off your loot. The gameplay is fast paced, and will likely be challenging for gamers who aren’t familiar with shooter games.
There are a range of weapons you can equip, though they will need to be purchased with coins. You can also change the look of your bot, again, with coins. You can gather coins through playing, or purchase them in-app for $1.99 to $19.99.
Both automatic and manual weapons are available, and automatic weapons will work more efficiently for less skilled players. There are also special weapons, such as exploding cacti, which will buy you some time to get to a safe.
Levels are timed, and at the end of each level, you’ll be rewarded with the coins that you managed to collect. You will also earn badges each time that you level up, and experience is earned when you grab coins.
What I liked: The graphics are great and the gameplay is smooth, even on 3G. It’s a good start to a game that’s only going to get better with time and more additions to the gameplay.
What I didn’t like: This game needs more content and more stages. There isn’t a lot of variety right now. Bounty Bots would be better with team based gameplay, or with the ability to create private matches. I’d also like to see an offline single player element to the game, as well as achievements and leaderboards.
To buy or not to buy: If you’re a fan of shooter games and like to play against other players, this is a worthwhile download, especially since it’s available for free.
