Some of the most innovative iOS products can be found on Kickstarter, the crowd funding website for unique and creative projects. A team of designers in Seattle has come up with a project that could change the face of iOS gaming – the Drone controller.
The Drone, by Evolution Controllers, is a hand-sized six-button Bluetooth game controller that has been developed for iOS and Android devices.
While the controller has been designed with classic games in mind (those that aren’t suited to touch controls) it will be able to be used by a wide range of iOS games, from the retro-styled to the modern.
The project is based on the Arduino platform, so it’s entirely open source. This means that players (and developers) will be able to upload their own code in able to modify the characteristics of the controller, tweaking it for every game.
Lots of thought went into the shape and the design of the controller, which is small, portable, and gently curved to fit comfortably in the hand. It is solidly built and can be tossed in a bag or a backpack, and for those who want the ultimate in customization, it comes with four removable screws that give access to the electronics.
You can get your hands on a Drone controller as soon as they’re available by pledging a minimum of $65 on Kickstarter. Got deep pockets? You can even get a customized silver plated or gold leaf controller in a special display case for the low price of $1,500 to $2,000, respectively.
