Celebrate the 100th Anniversary with Titanic: Her Journey – iPad App Review

TitanicWith an app that commemorates the 100th Anniversary of its sinking, Titanic: Her Journey is a lovely tribute that will be enjoyed by history buffs interested in the tragedy.

Described as “unsinkable,” the Titanic began her maiden voyage on April 10, 1912 only to meet her final resting place at the bottom of the icy sea at 2:20AM on April 15, 2012 taking 1500 people to their grave along with the boat itself. While many of us are familiar with the story, few of us know the exact details as provided in this app.

Executed with elegance and style, this app allows you to follow the 5-day voyage, view a photo slideshow, watch the construction of the ship, see detailed deck plans, learn about the people aboard, review the sinking timeline and losses data, get a series of “Did You Know?” style questions answered, learn about the Titanic legacy, witness haunting memorials and discover places to visit.

I had considered myself to be fairly knowledgeable about the Titanic, but I wasn’t aware of the conspiracy theories surrounding the sinking (ranging from a cursed Egyptian mummy to a Jesuit plot) or that many second-class passengers were in fact wealthy enough for first-class tickets but wanted to avoid hassles like having to change into full dress for meals.

What I liked: The menu system found within this app makes it very easy to navigate around to specific areas of interest without having to first cycle through other background details that you may not want to review.

What I didn’t like: It was sometimes difficult to tell whether I could swipe (to turn the ‘virtual pages’) for more information and when I had reached the end for that section.

To buy or not to buy: If you have an interest in the Titanic, this is a beautifully designed app with every detail you could ever want to know.

‘celebrate’? Maybe commemorate would be a better term!
