Brief News for UK… New iPad Sales Up 80%, NowTV Ready to Stream Movies to Tablets and other Devices

Our neighbors across the pond are experiencing enthusiasm for the new iPad about as much as the U.S. is. With the three million units sold in its first weekend, Apple has broken its own sales records, yet again, and the U.K. had something to do with it.

According to Pocket-lint, electronics super-giants PC World and Currys have reported some record sales of their own. Sales of the new iPad were 80 percent higher within the first four days after its release from the iPad 2’s sales. PC World claimed to have sold a new iPad every 20 seconds during its hour-and-a-half midnight opening.

Additionally, The Next Web has reported that British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB) recently announced a new Web television service to cater to the U.K. population that doesn’t currently subscribe to a pay TV service.

The new service, called Now TV, will offer movies, sports, TV shows and original content to customers who can either pay a monthly charge for unlimited content streaming or as a pay-per-go service for individual rentals.

Now TV has been confirmed to be compatible with all standard Web-enabled devices, including tablets, smart phones, game consoles and connected TVs. With all of the new iPad owners in the U.K., it looks like the media industry has a new consumer base to reach.
