New Retina Display Apps Section Available on iTunes

At about 9:00 p.m. PDT last night, I checked for new updates to my iPad 2 apps and, sure enough, there were 20 of them waiting to be downloaded. Most of them were getting the Retina display support. I never even managed to get them all updated because it was taking so dang long.

Today in the App Store, Apple has compiled a list of featured apps (Great apps for the new iPad) that have received the Retina display love for all of you new iPad owners out there looking to find the best way to really see what the third-generation tablet has to offer.

Some of the obvious winners of Apple’s top 24 list include Real Racing 2 HD, Modern Combat 3, Tweetbot and Solar Walk. Apps like Sky Gamblers, Infinity Blade II, and SketchBook Pro that were demoed at Apple’s product announcement event on March 7 are also included.

Some surprise additions include Barefoot World Atlas and Flight Control Rocket, which came out just yesterday.

Noticeably absent are Apple’s apps, like iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. Not to mention the popular iWorks apps, which are must-haves for any iPad owner. Presumably that is because these apps are not actually updated to support Retina display, which in-and-of-itself is unusual. You’d think that Apple would make its own apps Retina ready.

What are some of your favorite Retina display supported iPad apps? Are there any that have not yet made the upgrade that you’re hoping will jump on the bandwagon soon?
