Let Your Child Play Veterinarian on the iPad – iPad App Review

VeterinarianThe two things children love most are animals and role-playing. With happyKids – Veterinarian they can enjoy both. Coming to the aid of 2 dogs, 2 cats, a parrot and a cockatoo, your child can enjoy 24 different puzzles. To begin, select an animal patient in the waiting room and complete your examination.

Using this app you can squish fleas, help mend broken bones by sliding them back into place, check blood-pressure, help little greeblies find their way through digestive track mazes and even check a bird’s temperature with a thermometer!

This app has a bouncy up-beat quality that makes you smile from the moment you load it. The animals are also very easy to recognize, which is important for the younger children ages 2-6 (though I think most effective for the 2-4 year olds) for whom this app is designed.

The interface is very easy to work with with only very basic precision required to complete each task. When a puzzle is solved the app cheers and checks off the box on your clipboard indicating success. Children love this kind of positive reinforcement and I believe it functions much more effectively than most other scoring systems.

What I liked: I like that once you have completed a puzzle for a particular patient, the marker for it changes color so you can keep track to be sure you do them all!

What I didn’t like: While the soundtrack for this app does include perky sounds that are quite fun, it would have been nice to hear some narration with a little instruction for those children who may be old enough to play on the iPad somewhat independently.

To buy or not to buy: This app is unique and fantastic for children who adore helping and caring for animals while also being a good way to introduce the concept of veterinarians to small children so they understand that pets have doctors too!
