Join the Pride in The Lion King: Timon’s Tale – iPad App Review

The Lion King- Timon's TaleThe Lion King: Timon’s Tale is a colorful and engaging app based on “the beloved #1 Classically Animated Movie of all time!”

From the moment you load the app you are greeted with familiar opening music and Timon requesting your assistance to get things underway. Once you start, this story retelling will remind you of the journey Simba took from “cub to king.”

Fans of the movie will be delighted to see that each page in this electronic book is much more like a scene from the movie than a static illustration. Most pages can be interacted with in a way that is actually more like participation than the typical, simple, interaction-reaction style you may be used to.

My favorite part of this book (and a very unique feature) is when you get to practice your roar, trying to be as loud and scary as possible so that you can scare away the hyenas. Once you roar (and see the intensity displayed in an on-screen meter) it is played back for you to hear as part of the actual real narration!

What I liked: The book is more like an interactive short movie than a book which sets it apart from the competition for your attention.

What I didn’t like: Interactions with the app can be a little hard to intuit for younger children. The on-screen cue to swipe your finger downward to make the animals bow to the newly born Prince Simba don’t really give enough information (no arrows or narrator assistance) to make them obvious. Fortunately if you wait long enough the story will continue even if you don’t complete the actions.

To buy or not to buy: If you loved The Lion King, this app is a wonderful extension offering you the chance to spend more time with your favorite characters.
