Relive Your Childhood Playing Games Like Rampage And Joust With Midway Arcade

If you’ve ever visited a beach boardwalk midway arcade, you’ll love what this app has in store for you. Not only can you play arcade classics like Spy Hunter and Defender, but you can also try you skills at roll ball and air hockey. The midway showroom looks like an arcade you may have frequented in 1985 and the games make you feel like you are back there again.

The initial download comes with Arch Rivals, Defender, Joust, Rampage, Root Beer Tapper and Spy Hunter, as well as roll ball, basketball, air hockey and pool.

Players can visit each game by wandering through the virtual show room, or select games from the settings menu. Users can even listen to songs from their iPad’s music library by using the jukebox function.

For an additional $0.99 per package, players can purchase the Fantasy Pack, which includes Wizard of Wor, Gauntlet and Gauntlet II, and the Action Pack, which includes APB, NARC and Total Carnage.

Tickets are earned for every game played and are automatically redeemed for virtual prizes, like a Gauntlet Ham Leg or a Spy Hunter car. Players also earn achievements in Game Center for things like playing a game for the first time or winning certain prizes.

The arcade games are ports of the originals and look fantastic on the iPad screen. Some games use tilt controls, Like Spy Hunter and APB, but most use a virtual joystick with A and B buttons.

It is hard to believe that Warner Bros. decided to offer this app at such a low price. Even with the extra two dollars for the additional six games, players are still getting a bargain for so much arcade action.

What I liked: The virtual showroom is a great way to incorporate interaction with the game list. Instead of a boring sideswipe, players are taken through the arcade as if they were really there.

What I didn’t like: The joystick controls are awkward and have too large of a movement circumference. I would love to see this become compatible with iCade (without requiring a jailbreak).

To buy or not to buy: This app is an absolute must-have for retro gamers.  It is well designed and offers plenty of games for an unbelievably low price.
