Enjoy Round-the-World Storytelling with Tales for Great Grandchildren for iPad — iPad App Review

You don’t have to be a great grandparent to enjoy Tales for Great Grandchildren. This charming iPad book for children stems from a collaboration between author John Jackson and illustrator Daniela Jaglenka Terrazzini. The tales were inspired by Jackson’s trek around the Annapurna Himal in India and Nepal over 30 years ago.

The stories, which are recommended for 7 to 12-year-olds, include giants, animals, and one very beautiful lotus flower. All of the tales have morals — though like fables the point is often made by showing children what not to do — often with amusing or suspenseful results.

Though it includes both “read-to-self” and “read-to-me” modes, Tales for Great Grandchildren was meant to be read aloud. Jackson’s narration is top-notch. His soothing voice will entrance readers of all ages. Terrazzini’s illustrations capture the timeless nature of the stories.

Download Tales for Great Grandchildren for free from the App Store. The free download includes “The Hole in the Roof.” Users may purchase the complete collection in-app for $6.99 or download individuals stories from within the app for $0.99 each.

What I liked: The “Tales Behind the Tales” section increased my appreciation for the stories. It was interesting to learn about what motivated the author to write this book. “The Illustrated Journey” tells how the illustrator created her work. I loved the way the animation of the watercolor and ink illustrations maintain the book’s vintage feel as it simultaneously introduces movement.

What I didn’t like: The app doesn’t save the user’s place when closed. For example, if the iPad goes to sleep while the user is listening to the stories, not only does the app stop, but it reopens from the beginning, which requires the user to remember her place.

To buy or not to buy: Anyone who might enjoy these Asian-inspired folk tales should download the app for free and give Tales for Great Grandchildren a try. Those users who decide not to pony up for the full download will still get a sense of the app’s lovely and unusual aesthetic.
