Watch Sam and Ben Get in Double Trouble – iPad App Review

Sam and BenSam and Ben are wonderful twin boys with leading roles in this interactive eBook. While they may share the same birthday, they pride themselves on not being two peas in a pod. They do not look alike, act alike or even behave alike.

Once “squished together inside their mama’s belly”, Sam (with his golden hair that sticks up in every direction) and Ben (with his dark hair that curls into corkscrews) are as different as can be and their family is thrilled.

Each page features interactive elements that may be subtle but add interest to the already wonderful story. Some pages feature animations that don’t even require your help, watch toys move on their own making the pages playful and fun.

Included activities allow you to color pictures of Sam and Ben (done easily by sliding a finger over the top of the image, no selection of colors or utensils required which makes it ideal for very small children), help the boys put their toys away by sliding them through a simple maze (though the direct route without using the path works just as well), match the fashions worn by the little boys or have fun with crayons and create your own doodles.

What I liked: The story in this eBook is lovely and carries an important message (we are all loved for the things that make us special and unique) and the added activities are an absolute delight for those with very young children.

What I didn’t like: I wish that they had implemented word-highlighting in coordination with the narrator’s voice as I think that helps children as they learn to read and also gives them a sense of where they are as they follow along on the page.

To buy or not to buy: This app is a gem among iPad delivered books and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick this one up –particularly if you have twins in your friends and family circle!
