Promising to teach your child about beauty, sacrifice and courage, Rainbow Crow is a lovely Native American story about a brave crow who does what he needs to in order to save the creatures of the earth. As your child may learn, sometimes the best intentions aren’t enough. Sometimes there are consequences.
When the Rainbow Crow discovers he has been chosen to speak with the creator about the invention of snow, questions unravel regarding whether it is possible and what the costs might be.
The value of others above yourself is revealed through the story in this book and supported by the beautiful illustrations. While there were very few interactive elements, the page transitions were dynamic and a chime sounds when you tap the arrow to move ahead in the story. Dragging your fingers up the screen will let you flip through to specific pages in the book.
The language is very easy to understand for younger children, making this a good book to share with toddlers as well as older children… and everybody loves animals which is something that this book has in spades! The other side-benefit is that you learn a few things about the animals themselves in the words of the story –like the owl stating he can’t see in the light and can only fly by night.
What I liked: Stories like this teach your child something very important without their even realizing. At the end of the story there will be a new understanding of consequences, sacrifice and the value found in helping others.
What I didn’t like: Despite having a purchased version of the app, I had the ‘ads’ across the bottom of my screen which obscured my view of some of the text.
To buy or not to buy: This is a nice story with an even nicer message making it a good value for the cost.
