Who can resist an adorable cartoon cat named Porkchop who loves nothing more than naps and doughnuts? In Porkchop & Mouse by Ant Hive Games you can follow the adventures of a kitten who really hates mice and wakes up from a nap to find one eating her favorite snack!
Created by award winning children’s author Fiona Roberton, Porkchop & Mouse promises to be an interactive book for your iPad that is worthy of your attention and affection.
The illustrations for this story are very striking. High contrast colors make each scene vivid and attractive with each one looking almost like a poster you would frame and hang in your child’s room.
Along with now familiar modes that allow for narration, reading to yourself and recording your own voice, there are several included interactive elements including a piano player, tic-tac-toe mini game, flowers that spin and bottles that clink.
The animated and interactive elements are every bit as delightful as the rest of the app, whether you are adding footstep imprints in the sand or setting fish off swimming!
What I liked: I love the voice of the narrator. While she does have an accent there is no difficulty in understanding her and she reads at a very comfortable pace for listening.
What I didn’t like: While the reading of the story itself is well paced, the pages seem to turn far too quickly once the narrator has finished the text for each one. It would be nice to have a moment or two to play with the interactive elements and enjoy each illustration. This problem is solved by choosing to read the story yourself but then you lose the lovely narration.
To buy or not to buy: I just love this story and believe it will be especially adored by children who love cats.
